Hearings

A committee is permitted to organise a hearing with experts, where this is considered essential to its work on a particular subject. Hearings can also be held jointly by two or more committees. Most committees organise regular hearings, as they allow them to hear from experts and hold discussions on the key issues. Diversity

The European Parliament will hold a public hearing on the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) entitled ‘Minority Safepack – one million signatures for diversity in Europe’ on 15 October from 9.00 to 13.00. Due to current COVID-19 constraints, the meeting initially scheduled in March will be held partly remotely with limited physical presence in the room, but will be fully webstreamed for the public.

On 24 September 2020, the Committee on Constitutional Affairs will hold a public remote hearing on the 'Transnational lists and the Spitzenkandidaten principle', bringing together both internal and external experts who will discuss with AFCO Members the issues of transnational lists and the lead candidates system, based on lessons to be drawn from the last European elections and following inter-institutional nominations’ cycle.

CONT Hearing on follow-up of OLAF case files

On 06.07.2020, the CONT Committee held a public hearing entitled 'Follow-up of OLAF case files, fighting fraud, corruption and other irregularities in the Member States'. This public hearing focused on the follow-up of OLAF's recommendations and, in this regard, aimed to present different views from the Member States' authorities.

On 6 July, the Committee on Foreign Affairs will hold an online hearing on the geopolitical implications of the COVID-19 crisis. The pandemic has had profound geopolitical consequences that inevitably affect key aspects of EU foreign policy, including relations with major global powers, humanitarian aid, development and peacekeeping, and the fight against disinformation and cyber-attacks.

Parliament has set out its position on an ambitious coronavirus recovery plan to reboot the EU economy. MEPs are calling for citizens, the environment and digitalisation to be at the heart of the next long-term budget and the economic recovery.

On 15 June from 15.45 to 18.45, the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs will hold a public hearing with IMF and OECD chief economists (Gopinath and Boone) and top academics (Gourinchas, Gabor, Hoogduin, Giacché and Pettifor) on "The COVID-19 outbreak, its expected impact on the EU economy and possible policy responses including monetary and fiscal measures" to receive first-hand information and discuss policy options to respond to the crisis in the best possible way.

On 11 June 2020, the CONT Committee organised a public hearing entitled 'Implementation of EU funds: towards more effective management and control systems under shared management (i.e risk assessment tools, conditionality and future role of EPPO)'. This hearing focused on the current situation concerning prevention and remedies of errors and fraud in shared management and discussed possible ways Member States and the Commission can respond to shortcomings in shared management.

On 26 May from 10.00 to 12.00, the Committees on Budgets and on Economic and Monetary Affairs organised jointly a public hearing on “The role of the European Investment Bank in the EU response to the COVID-19 outbreak and the post-crisis recovery”.
