From messaging apps to online marketplaces, digital services are central to our daily lives.  

But the online world is also home to fake news, harmful content and dubious business practices and has become dominated by big tech companies.  

The European Parliament has passed new rules to regulate them and ensure a fairer and safer environment for businesses and consumers.

IMCO will hold an exchange of views in full committee on the implementation of the Digital Markets Act. Members will hear interventions from independent experts and industry representatives on self-preferencing, and app stores. Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager will intervene on behalf of the Commission.

Human Rights

IMCO held an exchange of views in full committee on the implementation of the Digital Services Act. Members heard interventions from Commission speakers and external representatives on issues connected to enforcement. The Federation of European Data Protection Officers, the Fundamental Rights Agency and the Center for Democracy & Technology, which represents a civil society perspective participated.

IMCO Members discussed with Mr Enrico Letta, former Italian Prime Minister and President of the Jacques Delors Institute, the main findings and preliminary recommendations to be included in the High-Level Report on the future of the Single Market, which is to be presented to the Council in spring. The main stakeholders were also invited to take part in the discussion.

The European Parliament is committed to ensure that all persons with disabilities can live an independent life and be fully integrated into society. In order to analyse existing initiatives to protect and empower people with disabilities, and to reflect on challenges ahead and prepare for future activities, Parliament will hold its first Disability Rights Week. Many committees will be voting, debating and holding events regarding disability policies. Detailed activities below:

An ad hoc delegation of seven Members travelled to Washington DC at the end of October to assess possibilities of cooperation and cohesiveness of laws in place in the digital sphere, political advertising and artificial intelligence, among other topics of interest. Members held meetings with a White House Special Adviser, House Representative Don Beyer, Federal Government officials, as well as think tanks.

On 19 - 23 June 2023, an IMCO delegation visited Tel Aviv and Jerusalem with the aim of learning more about Israel's regulatory environment boosting high-profile hubs, digital companies and technological innovation, while ensuring consumer protection.

On 15-19 May 2023, ahead of the G7 summit in Hiroshima, a delegation of seven Members chaired by Ms Christel Schaldemose (S&D) travelled to Japan. The main aim of the delegation was to learn about the Japanese regulatory approach to digital products and services, as Japan is one of the world leaders in the sector, with over 300 registered AI-related companies.

On 3-7 April 2023, an IMCO delegation of seven Members travelled to Singapore. Primarily, the delegation wanted to focus on customs, which is one of the core responsibilities of the Committee. The members of the delegation were Ms Maria Grapini (S&D), Mr Andreas Schwab (EPP), Mr Ivan Štefanec (EPP), Ms Tsvetelina Penkova (S&D), Mr Morten Løkkegaard (Renew), Ms Alessandra Basso (ID), and Mr Adam Bielan (ECR).

On 20-22 February 2023, an IMCO mission of four Members and the IMCO Chair travelled to Helsinki (Finland) and Tallinn (Estonia) to look into the circular economy and e-government initiatives in both countries.

Mission

A Delegation of five IMCO MEPs, led by Chair Ms Anna Cavazzini, visited Ireland from 19 to 21 December 2022 to see first hand the effects of the EU-UK Withdrawal and Trade & Cooperation Agreements, and the related Protocol on Northern Ireland. Briefings were received on the perspectives of the Irish Government, representatives of business and consumers, and two private sector businesses, whose activities in Ireland North and South depend on the Protocol for future commercial success.

During the joint IMCO-LIBE meeting of 11 May, Parliament's co-rapporteurs Brando Benifei and Dragoș Tudorache presented their draft report on the new Artificial Intelligence Act.
