“Although one country has decided to leave, the EU remains indispensable for the rest of us. In the aftermath of the wars and deep divisions on our continent, the EU secured peace, democracy and enabled our countries to prosper. [...] The EU is not perfect but it is the best instrument we have for addressing the new challenges we are facing.”

This is my last full plenary session I am chairing as President of the European Parliament and it is a moving moment for me. Five years ago, after being elected as President, I said that it was my goal to make the European Parliament more visible, more audible and more influential. Five years later, I can say that together we have achieved this: today the Parliament is more visible, more audible and more influential than ever.

Speech on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Maastricht Treaty
Speeches - - Maastricht - 09-12-2016
Coming to Maastricht is always a very special pleasure to me. I was born only some 40km from here, and those of you in the audience who come from this region, will know that it has a very special feeling to it. I use to say that someone coming from here, where the borders of the Netherlands, of Belgium and Germany meet and those countries flow almost seamlessly into each other, must almost definitely develop a sort of European identity, or at least a very personal understanding of what Europe is about.

Almost two years ago, on the 27th of February 2015, Boris Nemtsov was brutally murdered in the centre of Moscow, on a bridge right next to the Kremlin. He was one of the leaders of Russia’s liberal and democratic opposition, a reformer, supported and admired by many in Russia.

Schulz on the result of the US presidential elections
Press Release - - Brussels - 09-11-2016
The US electorate has spoken. The victory of Donald Trump is unequivocal and must be respected. I congratulate him and the Republican Party on their victory. Mr Trump has managed to become the standard-bearer of the angst and fears of millions of Americans. Those concerns must now be addressed with credible policies and proposals. This campaign will not be remembered as America’s finest. Vitriol and polarisation have fuelled this electoral contest. President Trump will have the daunting task of bringing together a divided nation.

Schulz on the detention of Selahattin Demirtaş, Figen Yüksekdag and HDP Members of Parliament in Turkey
Press Release - - Brussels - 04-11-2016
Today’s detentions send a chilling signal about the state of political pluralism in Turkey. Selahattin Demirtaş, Figen Yüksekdag and HDP Members of Parliament are legitimate and democratic representatives of Turkish society. The HDP is the third biggest group in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. I have met Selahattin Demirtaş many times. He is a leader committed to the peace process, to non-violence, to political dialogue and to the rule of law. In our last meeting at the end of September, he already feared he would be next in the line to be detained.
