Schulz on reported Russian blacklist of European politicians and officials
Press Release - Brussels - 30-05-2015
I am dismayed by reports concerning a Russian blacklist of European politicians and officials which, over and above, includes a large number of prominent and high-ranking Members of the European Parliament. It is unacceptable that this further diminishes mutual trust and hampers any efforts for constructive dialogue to find a peaceful and lasting solution to the current geopolitical crisis.

Opening speech at the high-level seminar "The European Union and Latin America: common challenges and opportunities"
Speeches - - Brussels - 28-05-2015
I am very happy to have the opportunity to open the conference on relations between the EU and the Latin American and Caribbean States, and cordially welcome you to the European Parliament. I should like to begin by thanking my colleague Ramón Jáuregui Atondo – a tireless advocate of Eurolat – for organising the conference. I have for a long time taken a strong personal interest in relations between our two continents. Europe and Latin America are natural allies. Not only do we share such common values as democracy, the rule of law and human rights, but we also share interests, for example with regard to a multilateral world order or trade issues.

I congratulate Andrzej Duda on his election victory. Poland-EU relations are a cornerstone of Poland’s recent success story. I look forward to working with President Duda and hearing his ideas and plans on how to advance the EU project to the mutual benefit of Poland and its European partners. I also pay tribute to Bronisław Komorowski for his statesmanship and relentless engagement in the advancement of the EU project throughout his presidency.

Speech by President Schulz at the Eastern Partnership summit in Riga
Speeches - - Riga - 22-05-2015
When we came together at the last Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius two years ago, no one could have foreseen the dramatic events that unfolded in its wake. The illegal annexation of Crimea has shaken the European security architecture. And the conflict in Eastern Ukraine continues to weigh heavily on our relationship with Russia. Yet, one thing has changed from Vilnius to Riga: the EU's overall capacity to respond to the peoples' hopes for a better future and to the challenges in the region has improved substantially.

Speech by Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, to mark his receipt of the International Charlemagne Prize in Aachen
Speeches - Aachen - 14-05-2015
When I was a boy, every year on Ascension Day my father, a policeman, was assigned to the detail whose duty it was to protect dignitaries attending the Charlemagne Prize award ceremony. I kept asking my mother where he was and what he was doing, and so she started taking me along to Aachen Town Hall. Standing next to my mother in the marketplace and seeing Jens Otto Krag or Joseph Luns waving from the town hall steps, I never dreamed that one day I, too, would be awarded the Charlemagne Prize.

Celebrating Europe is synonymous to celebrating peace
Press Release - - Brussels - 08-05-2015
This year's Europe Day which we will celebrate tomorrow is a special one with 2015 marking the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The spectacle of horror that was this war, with an outrageous accumulation of barbarity, plunged humanity into the abyss. Our continent however was able to rise above hatred and fear to unite in solidarity, democracy, and tolerance for a project of political and economic union which remains unique in the world. Never has our continent known such a long period without conflict. Celebrating Europe is synonymous to celebrating peace.

Train of a Thousand – International Youth-meeting Auschwitz 2015 – Speech by Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament
Speeches - Auschwitz-Birkenau - 08-05-2015
we have come together here in Auschwitz today, this place of darkness where unique acts of evil were committed. During the greatest horror mankind has ever known, 1,1 million innocent people -men, women, children, babies - were murdered here in the hell of Auschwitz-Birkenau. In a ruthless killing machine, which stigmatized and denigrated, turned names into numbers and was hell-bent on annihilation.

Schulz on vote of resolution on asylum and migration
Press Release - Strasbourg - 29-04-2015
Today's resolution on asylum and migration, adopted by an overwhelming majority (449 votes in favour), contains a number of concrete steps urgently expected from the Commission, the Council and the Member States. The dramatic tragedies of the last days and weeks have demonstrated once again the painful truth that the Mediterranean is the world's deadliest border. The commitments made during last week's extraordinary European Council are a first step but they are not enough by far.

Special European Summit 23 April 2015 in Brussels - Speech by Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament
Speeches - Brussels - 23-04-2015
Twenty years ago, I became a member of the European Parliament. For twenty years, the European Parliament has been calling for a truly European asylum and migration policy. Today, I could still deliver the same speech, I delivered twenty years ago. Sadly and tragically, not much has changed. We witness the same tragedy repeating itself over and over again as more people perish in the Mediterranean.
