  1. The president of the European Commission
    1.   Taking into account the results of the European elections. the president of the European Council consults with the EP on a possible candidate for the presidency of the Commission.
    2.   Following the consultation, the President of the European Council proposes a candidate to the European Council.
    3.   The European Council decides on its proposal for candidate by qualified majority.
    4.   Election of the Commission President by the European Parliament by a majority of its component members (at least 376)
    Duties
    • Gives political guidance to the Commission
    • Calls and chairs meetings of the college of the Commissioners
    • Leads the Commission's work in implementing EU policies
Jean-Claude Juncker

Born in 1954, Jean-Claude Juncker studied law at the University of Strasbourg. He was appointed as deputy minister of labour in his native Luxembourg at the age of 28. He later became minister of labour and minister of finance before serving as prime minister from 1995 to 2013. He was also president of the Eurogroup from 2005-2013. The EPP chose him as their candidate for the presidency of the European Commission on 7 March 2014. Juncker was elected as president of the European Commission on 15 July when 422 MEPs voted in favour of supporting his candidacy.

 

With 422 votes in favour, the European Parliament elected Jean-Claude Juncker in a secret ballot on 15 July as President of the new European Commission to take office on 1 November 2014 for a five year term.
