In 2014, the Commission presented a proposal for a regulation on medicated feed with the aim to update and harmonise rules that dated from 1990 and were laid out in a directive. Patchy national implementation was causing difficulties for producers, animal holders and the single market. Due to the strong correlation between the proposal on medicated feed and the draft regulation on veterinary medicinal products, legislative work on both acts was being coordinated to assure consistency between their ...

Each year, millions of live animals are transported by road, sea, rail and air within, and to or from, the European Union, for a number of reasons, such as slaughter, fattening or breeding. To protect their welfare during those journeys, the EU adopted Regulation 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport. An evaluation of the regulation showed that, when correctly implemented and enforced, it had a positive impact on the welfare of animals. However, in some areas weaknesses still persist ...

The purpose of this study is to review animal welfare practices during transport in and to third countries. It compares the practices, guidelines and tools used by main trading partners with the EU and European standards. It also provides concrete policy recommendations on how to improve the current EU legislation on animal welfare during transport, taking practices in third countries, reports from the Commission, scientific work, enforcement practices by competent authorities, and reports from NGOs ...

This study provides a technical overview and policy recommendations of the welfare need during transport of unweaned animals and pregnant females. During long journeys unweaned calves may experience negative welfare consequences such as prolonged hunger and thirst, resting problems, thermal stress and diseases. Further research is needed to develop appropriate methods to determine the gestational age during late pregnancy when the date of insemination or matting is unavailable, as well as to establish ...

Every year, millions of live animals are transported within and outside European Union (EU) territory for trade purposes. EU legislation regulates the protection of animals during transport, but reports of breaches of the rules and accidents raise doubts on the transport of live animals and have rekindled the debate on the need to improve the current legislation.

Animal medicines package

In September 2014, the European Commission put forward a package of three proposals to update the legislative framework for veterinary medicines. More stringent rules are intended to tackle antimicrobial resistance and to improve the availability of veterinary medicines in the EU. During its October II plenary session, the European Parliament is expected to vote on the texts agreed in trilogue negotiations.

Aquaculture in the EU

Lyhyesti 03-10-2017

Aquaculture means the rearing of aquatic animals and the cultivation of aquatic plants and algae. While, at global level, this industry has undergone significant growth for several decades, in the EU, aquaculture production, focused on the farming of fish and shellfish for human consumption, is rather stagnating. Subject to diverse EU policies, such as environmental protection or animal and consumer health, the development of aquaculture largely depends on measures taken by national authorities. ...

Sheep and goats grazing on meadows in the countryside are part of the landscape and cultural heritage of many European countries. They are a source of employment in disadvantaged agricultural areas and the high-quality traditional products they yield are broadly recognised as the result of a sustainable and multifunctional form of agriculture that contributes to preserving the environment and social cohesion in rural areas. Yet, the EU sheep and goat sector has been experiencing economic and structural ...
