Glavna postignuća prvih sklopljenih ugovora obuhvaćaju stvaranje vlastitih resursa Zajednice, osnaživanje proračunskih ovlasti Parlamenta, biranje zastupnika u Europskom parlamentu neposrednim glasovanjem na općim izborima i uspostavu Europskog monetarnog sustava. Stupanjem na snagu Jedinstvenog europskog akta 1986., kojim je bitno izmijenjen Ugovor iz Rima, osnažena je europska integracija zahvaljujući stvaranju opsežnog unutarnjeg tržišta.

Parlament svoju institucionalnu ulogu u stvaranju europskih politika afirmira obnašanjem raznih dužnosti. Sudjeluje u zakonodavnom postupku, izvršava proračunske i nadzorne ovlasti, sudjeluje u reviziji temeljnih ugovora i ima pravo intervenirati pred Sudom Europske unije, čime se osigurava poštovanje demokratskih načela na europskoj razini.

U zajedničkoj vanjskoj i sigurnosnoj politici (ZVSP) te u nekoliko drugih područja, kao što su pojačana suradnja, određena imenovanja i revizija ugovora, postupak donošenja odluka razlikuje se od onog koji prevladava u redovnom zakonodavnom postupku.
