Each year, millions of live animals are transported by road, sea, rail and air within, and to and from, the European Union, for a number of reasons, such as slaughter, fattening or breeding. La ricerca in esame intende analizzare le pratiche in materia di benessere degli animali durante il trasporto all'interno di paesi terzi e verso gli stessi. Opera un confronto tra le pratiche, gli orientamenti e gli strumenti utilizzati dai principali partner commerciali e le norme europee e dell'Unione. Inoltre, formula raccomandazioni strategiche concrete su come migliorare la legislazione vigente dell'UE relativa al benessere degli animali durante il trasporto.

This note aims to provide the Members of the ANIT Committee with a state of play on existing literature and data sources on live animal transport through links to key information sources and existing reports and studies.

Every year, millions of live animals are transported within and outside European Union (EU) territory for trade purposes. EU legislation regulates the protection of animals during transport, but reports of breaches of the rules and accidents raise doubts on the transport of live animals and have rekindled the debate on the need to improve the current legislation.
