Laikui bėgant Europos Sąjungoje gaminama vis mažiau darbui imlių nedidelės vertės gaminių ir vis dažniau specializuojamasi gaminant didesnės vertės firmines prekes. ES ekonomika yra atvira, todėl prekyba jai labai svarbi. Siekdama pašalinti prekybos kliūtis ir sudaryti vienodas sąlygas savo įmonėms, Sąjunga derasi dėl keleto laisvosios prekybos susitarimų (LPS). ES taip pat yra Pasaulio prekybos organizacijos (PPO) steigėja ir svarbi jos veikėja.

Pasaulio prekybos organizacija (PPO) siekia užtikrinti taisyklėmis pagrįstą tarptautinę prekybos sistemą. Nepaisant prekybos derybų aklavietės, ieškoma būdų, kaip modernizuoti PPO taisykles ir atremti naujus pasaulinius iššūkius. Remiantis Lisabonos sutartimi, Parlamentas kartu su Taryba priima teisės aktus, turi pritarti bet kokiems PPO susitarimų pakeitimams arba naujiems PPO susitarimams ir atlieka svarbų tarptautinės prekybos politikos tikrinimo vaidmenį.

ES vystymosi politikoje pabrėžiama prekybos svarba ir daugiausia dėmesio skiriama šalims, kurioms labiausiai reikia pagalbos. Pagal bendrųjų muitų tarifų lengvatų sistemą kai kurioms prekėms iš besivystančių šalių suteikiama galimybė patekti į ES rinką lengvatinėmis sąlygomis. Ekonominės partnerystės susitarimais užtikrinamas lengvatinis prekybos režimas Afrikos, Karibų ir Ramiojo vandenyno regiono valstybėms, o programa „Viskas, išskyrus ginklus“ taikoma mažiausiai išsivysčiusioms šalims.
