On September 22, 2020 Members of the European Parliament from the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, the Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Delegation for Relations with the United States and from the Delegtion for Relations with the United States joined the U.S. Helsinki Commission Chairman Rep. Alcee L. Hastings (FL-20), other Helsinki Commissioners, and select members of Congress discussing racial equity, equality and justice with the goal of reinforcing US-EU parliamentary coordination to combat racism and systemic discrimination.  Following the meeting, participants issued a joint declaration on transatlantic collaboration to address racism and systemic discrimination, including the establishment of a forum for a regular exchange of views between elected representatives and stakeholders on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Transatlantic Legislators' Dialogue Co-Chairs Radek Sikorski and Jim Costa, along with the Vice-Chairs of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with the US, the Chairs of the EP Foreign Affairs and International Trade Committees and of the Delegation for relations with the People's Republic of China, issued a statement highlighting four main objectives: helping to overcome the acute health crisis; exiting the economic recession quickly; showing transatlantic leadership in the international arena and collaborating on China and Russia.

EU lawmaker Bernd Lange and US Congress Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) spoke on EU-US trade relations with the Honorable Carlos Gutierrez moderating the discussion. Despite recent setbacks and ongoing irritants, the parliamentarians remained hopeful of future EU-US trade progress, calling the transatlantic partnership one of “the most important economic relationships in the world.”

In a joint event on US and EU relations with China, MEP Reinhard Bütikofer and Schar School of Policy and Government scholars Ming Wan and Ellen Laipson rejected a simplified cold-war paradigm, giving instead nuanced perspectives into the rise of US-China tensions and the EU’s relations with both countries. It was noted that the EU is in the best position to lead cooperation on global issues like climate change and pandemic response. Despite asymmetries between US and EU interests in China, panelists agreed for the need to reaffirm shared transatlantic values and identify common interests for future cooperation on Asia-Pacific policy.

Europe and the United States have emerged as two key battlegrounds for state-backed disinformation efforts around the coronavirus pandemic. EU High Representative Josep Borrell has called disinformation around the coronavirus the “global battle of narratives.” U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said such campaigns are designed to “try and place confusion in the world” around the origin of the virus and governments’ response to it. Teaming up with our partners at the German Marshall Fund of the United States this event brought together European Parliament Member Sophie In't Veld Chair of European Parliament's Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monioring Group and Laura Rosenberger, Director of the Alliance for Securing Democracy at GMF. The result is a great discussion between transatlantic experts on disinformation and the challenges Europe and the United States are facing together.
